Ethiopians remember 85th anniversary of massacre by fascists – New Business Ethiopia

Ethiopians commemorate this morning in Addis Ababa the 85th anniversary of the massacre of more than 30,000 Ethiopians in three days by then fascist Italian soldiers.

The commemoration event takes place at Sidist Kilo where the ‘Yekatit 12’ memorial statue is located. The president of the Association of Former Patriots of Ethiopia, Lij Daniel Jote, addressed the assembly. He said that Yekatit 12 is one of the testimonies of unity and invincible strength of Ethiopians.

“We commemorate the day to remember the patriots who sacrificed their lives and the innocent people massacred by the Italian fascist troops of the time,” said Lij Daniel, urging the younger generation to maintain this spirit of independence and sovereignty of their ancestors and grandmothers, and to pass on to the next generation.

Today February 19, 2021 is Yekatit 12 (February 12) and the year is 2014 according to Ethiopian calendar. History reported that on Friday, February 19, 1937, following an abortive attack by a handful of insurgents on Mussolini’s high command in the Italian-occupied nation-state of Ethiopia, “squads of repression” composed of armed blackshirts and fascist civilians were unleashed against the defenseless inhabitants of the capital Addis Ababa.

In three days and nights filled with terror of arson, murder and looting, thousands of innocent and unsuspecting men, women and children were roasted alive, shot, bludgeoned, stabbed to death or torn to pieces with hand grenades.
