H.E Almtseshay Meseret, the Ethiopian Ambassador to Uganda has expressed the need for African states to focus on working together in addressing challenges facing various member states as well as the whole continent at large.
At an event held to celebrate African Day at Ethiopian Ambassador’s residence in Kololo, Meseret pointed out that Ethiopia is still committed to its earlier pledge of ensuring that all African states work together.
“Ethiopia being one of the first African states to gain independence, it helped many African countries to regain independence by providing them with all kinds of support so as to liberate themselves from the colonialists,” remarked Meseret.
The Ambassador pointed out an example of the founding members of African Union like Emperor Haile Sellasie who put aside their ideological differences with other African nationalists and focused on promoting unity across the continent.
“Ethiopia is the largest coffee producing country in Africa followed by Uganda and I am happy that both countries have a very good working relationship in both coffee production and processing,” she added.

Hon John Mulimba, the Minister in charge of Regional Affairs revealed that this year’s African Union day event celebrated under the theme “The importance of addressing Mal Nutrition and food insecurity” is timely especially during this period when the continent is facing challenges of food insecurity.
“These challenges continue to weaken production capacities of various economic agents in the food value chain; the national and regional measures put in place to prevent covid-19 have disrupted economic and livelihood activities in the service sector, tourism, commodity export, remittance from abroad among others,” Mulimba said.
He blamed low food production on interstate /intercommunity conflicts, effects of Climates Change, Covid-19 as well as the war in Ukraine.
“Uganda has under taken a number of interventions to end hunger and ensure availability of nutritious and sufficient food to its citizens. The interventions include establishment of irrigation schemes to reduce reliance on rain agriculture, introduction of high yield seeds and animals resistant to bad weather, drought, pests and disease as well as value additional post-harvest processes,” he added.
