The Institute of International Education (IIE) has protected the lives and careers of academics for a century, supporting scholars facing threats amidst the Bolshevik Revolution, the Spanish Civil War, the Hungarian Revolution, and other periods of unrest. IIE formalized its scholar rescue activities in 2002 by establishing the Scholar Rescue Fund to ensure that emergency assistance and academic opportunities are always available to scholars whenever and wherever they may be in danger. As IIE marks its 100th year of scholar rescue throughout 2020, IIE-SRF will launch several initiatives to expand and enhance its response to the growing number of scholars worldwide who face persecution and violence.

IIE has a long history of providing emergency assistance to students and the Emergency Student Fund was established to provide financial support to students who are at risk of dropping out of their studies due to natural disaster, armed conflict, or political strife in their home countries.

This July, the Institute of International Education (IIE) and 14 university partners are excited to welcome nearly 500 Brazilian public-school English teachers to the USA for PDPI, a 6-week professional development program. PDPI (Programa de Desenvolvimento Profissional para Professores de Lingua Inglesa nos EUA) makes up part of the Brazilian government’s strategic plan to improve English language teaching and teacher training in all states of Brazil. It is funded by the Brazilian Federal Agency for Support and Evaluation of Graduate Education (CAPES) and administered by IIE and the Brazilian Fulbright Commission.

IIE today awarded the 14th annual IIE Victor J. Goldberg Prize for Peace in the Middle East to three pairs of Jewish Israelis and Muslim Arabs working to advance peace and reduce tensions in the region. This year three separate initiatives were recognized. Roie Ravitsky and Raed Badir won for their Mosaica Religious Peace Initiative. Dor Dayan and Shadi Khatib won for Middle East Peace Players Tamra/Naharia’s All-Star team. Harb Amara and Dr. Nava Sonnenschein won for Change Agents: Jewish and Palestinian Professionals.
IIE Releases Intensive English Program (IEP) Data on 2017 International Student Enrollments

Overall, 86,786 international students participated in an intensive English program (IEP) in the United States in 2017, according to recently released IIE data. IEP programs in United States are offered by higher education institutions and independent providers, and are one way for international students to initiate their education in the United States.
IIE PEER Expands Higher Education Opportunities for Displaced Students Worldwide

Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship Program Announces 2018 Fellowship Recipients

The Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship Program, now in its fifth year, has selected 43 African Universities in Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania and Uganda to host 55 African-born scholars to build partnerships between home and host universities and address priority needs at host universities and countries. The program is funded by Carnegie Corporation of New York and managed by the Institute of International Education (IIE) in collaboration with United States International University-Africa (USIU-Africa) in Nairobi, Kenya, which coordinates the activities of the Advisory Council.
