UNESCO Chair on Futures of Education to undertake working mission in Cape Verde

The University of Lisbon’s UNESCO Chair on the Futures of Education, headed by Professor Antonio Novoa, is set to undertake a working mission in Cape Verde from 15th to 18th March 2023. Organized in collaboration with the University of Cape Verde, Cape Verdean national authorities, and Cape Verdean National Commission for UNESCO, the mission will focus on the futures of education through two conferences.

The first conference, entitled “The Transformation of the School, 200 Years Later, and The Challenges of Teacher Training for a New School/New Education,” will take place in Praia on 16th March. The session, chaired by the Minister of Education, will be attended by a host of notable personalities and professors, including the Rector of the University of Cape Verde.

The second conference, to be held in Mindelo on 17th March, will be titled “The Current Challenges of Education and the Role of the University as a Central Institution for the Country.” The event will bring together the Secretary of State for Higher Education, the Rector of the University of Cape Verde, and educators from various institutions.

The mission aims to build on the UNESCO report, Reimagining our futures together: A new social contract for education, which Professor Novoa, as a member of the International Commission on the Futures of Education, was instrumental in producing. The focus will be on two critical areas of the report: teacher training and higher education. Aside from the conferences, meetings and workshops will be held with schools, teachers, and education authorities to develop ideas and policies in line with UNESCO’s report.

The ultimate objective of the mission is to foster collaboration and continuity of work towards better preparation of the Cape Verdean education system for future challenges. This document, in Portuguese, prepared by the Cape Verdean authorities provides more information on the mission’s goals.
